Travel Guide Silverthorne, Colorado

silverthorne-coSilverthorne sits on the Blue River below the dam for Lake Dillon. The views in Silverthorne are of Buffalo Mountain and Red Mountain to the west, both in the Eagles Nest Wilderness area, and Ptarmigan Mountain and the Continental Divide to the east. Through it all runs the Blue River, a paradise for fly-fisherman year round as water is released from the dam. There is also rafting during a short period of the highest spring run off when more water than normal must be added to the flow of the Blue to control the levels of Lake Dillon. Highway 6 to the south of Interstate 70 and Highway 9 to the north are a shopper’s paradise for locals and tourists alike. Next to I-70 are fast food restaurants, gas stations and hotels.

About Silverthorne

fly fishing guides breckenridgeHistory:
The town of Silverthorne was incorporated in 1967, and was originally the site of some of the buildings that were moved from the old town of Dillon with the flooding of Lake Dillon, including the post office and a general store. It is now the most populated town of Summit County and serves as its commercial center. To the north of town along the banks of the Blue River are ranches that have had water rights since the 1800s.
