LEADVILLE TRAIN RIDES


leadville train ridesThis journey is full of breath-taking panoramas across the Arkansas River Valley and humorous narratives about Leadville’s colorful past. Family and friends of all ages have a chance to engage in learning about historic Leadville, Colorado, home to legends like Molly Brown and Horace, Augusta and Baby Doe Tabor, the Guggenheims and at one time Doc Holiday. The train ascends 1,000 feet off the valley floor so that you will have some spectacular views of Fremont Pass and the two tallest peaks in Colorado, Mt. Massive and Mt. Elbert. Other highlights include a chance to meet the engineer, and to take a tour of the caboose and engine. You may also ride in the engine one way, or the caboose one way with an outdoor viewing platform for two and a cupola on top with two seats. Well behaved pets are also welcome and bring a picnic if you would like.

Tour Option 2 | Fremont Pass Rails & Zip Line


leadville train ridesCheck in at the base camp to receive your voucher to ride on the LEADVILLE COLORADO & SOUTHERN RAILROAD. A shuttle will take you to the train depot in Leadville. You will then board your historic train and leave the valley floor on a ride ascending 1000 feet to meet your zip line guides at 11,000 feet. After a hearty box lunch served in a high mountain yurt and flight training school, you will start on your Colorado zip line tour. Your zips will take you back to your vehicle waiting for you at base camp. Early and late season rides will eat lunch on the train.

LOOP TRAIN RIDES


georgetown train coloradoThe beauty of the rugged Rocky Mountains surrounds you, as a historic steam locomotive chugs its way down and up the canyon, hauling your carriages past the remains of several gold and silver mines. Completed in 1884, this spectacular stretch of three foot narrow gauge railroad was considered an engineering marvel for its time, gaining an elevation of 640 feet between the thriving mining communities of Georgetown and Silver Plume. You can enhance your experience by taking a walking tour of the Lebanon or Everett silver mines. Most rides are in open carriages but closed carriages will be used in early and late season and in inclement weather. If you are just taking a train ride only, departures are from both the Silver Plume and Georgetown Devil’s Gate depots. Specialty trains as well as early and late season trains may depart only from Silver Plume or Georgetown.

The train between Silver Plume and Georgetown, two miles apart in a narrow mountain canyon, follows a “corkscrew” route that loops back on itself requiring trestles, cuts, fills and curves, totaling 3.1 miles of track. The route includes horseshoe curves, grades of up to 4%, and four bridges across Clear Creek, including the massive Devil’s Gate High Bridge, restored in 1984 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of its construction. Choose between riding in a covered open Coach, ideal for taking photos, or the reserved seating in the enclosed Parlor with a snack and a drink, with beer and wine available from the bar.

Tour Option 2 | Silver Plume & Georgetown Train & Mine Tour


Enhance your train ride with a 3/4 mile walking tour of the Lebanon Silver Mine, located at the halfway point on the railroad. The tour takes you 500 feet into a mime tunnel bored in the 1870s. Your guide will point out rich veins of silver and tell you about early-day mining. The temperature in the mine is a constant 44 degrees Fahrenheit so you will want to dress appropriately. The tour also includes a visit to the manager’s office, the miners’ change room and the tool shed. and can include gold panning after the tour as an optional add-on. The Extended Mine Tour goes into the newly reopened southwest Lebanon access tunnel. This takes you over 900 feet into Leavenworth Mountain. You will see naturally occurring “silver pearls”, calcified hobnail boot prints, calcite dams, and stalactites that are over a 100 years old. The Everett Mine tour is a shorter mine tour, descending 250′ underground, but includes gold panning after the tour as well as a hot dog, chips and lemonade. Mine tours are not suitable for children under the minimum child age (no strollers are allowed) or for anyone who is mobility impaired. For the Everett Mine Tour there is a sand box where younger children may play accompanied by an adult, while older children enjoy the mine accompanied by an adult.

Tour Option 4 | Railroad Days


The Park County Regulators will be joining you for Railroad Days at the Loop, and it is expected that they will be up to trouble! There will be a few engines on display at the Silver Plume train yard, a Steam Engine Bounce House in the car museum, old West BBQ at the Devil’s Gate Depot, and summer desserts like Cotton Candy, Snow Cones and Ice Cream at the Silver Plume Depot. Mine tours may also be added to this ride for an additional cost.

Tour Option 5 | Fall Colors Hike & Ride


Hikers will meet a the Silver Plume Depot, and hike downhill through the mountains. This excursion is recommended only for those ages twelve and above and that can hike downhill at an elevation of 9000 feet for a distance of 2 miles over a period of approximately 4 hours. At the end of the hike you will board the train for transportation back to your vehicle.  Good closed toe hiking or sturdy tennis shoes are recommended. There is a restroom break about midway through the hike. No animals are allowed. Come see history from the inside.

You will hike the trails and wagon roads that the miners did in the 1800s. Your guide will start you with a brief overview of the engine house where the maintenance on the trains is done. Next there is a visit to the old Silver Plume Cemetery on a ridge above the valley that the train ascends through. You will see sections of the torrent that is Clear Creek that cannot be viewed from the train, hike to the old baseball field where the miners and other locals played America’s pastime into the 1920s, and have opportunities to photograph the train up close as it goes by. Other stops include the Hall tunnel tipple and the Hall dump where millions of dollars of silver were taken out up until the 1930s. A visit to the Lebanon or Everett silver mines, tour of one of the mines, panning for gold, and a great all-beef hot dog lunch is included. At the end of your day you will ride the train back to Silver Plume to retrieve your car for your drive home.

Tour Option 6 | Pumpkin Festival & Oktoberfest Colorado Train Ride


The Pumpkin Festival is a great excursion for children, parents and grandparents. The festival is set up at the Silver Plume car museum and includes a “BOUNCIE” castle, free pumpkins to carve and take home for all of the children, games, face painting and some wonderful characters to entertain the kiddos. You are able to experience the Pumpkin Festival before or after your ride with Silver Plume departures. On the Oktoberfest train, departing from the Georgetown Devil’s Gate depot only, all riders receive a complimentary hot dog or bratwurst and free microbrew beer tasting for all adults with root beer for the children.

Begin your haunted journey at the Devil’s Gate Depot Halloween Party hosted by Ghosts of the past. Then if you dare take a train ride to the haunted Lebanon Mine. You will be guided through the haunted mine and spooky buildings experiencing the stories that trapped ghosts and wraiths here for all eternity, they may want company.

Tour Option 8 | Santa’s North Pole & Holiday Lighted Forest Train Ride


Join Santa and his helpers aboard a decorated, heated, and enclosed coach from November 16 to December 24. There will be free hot chocolate, candy canes and cookies for all, together with a souvenir gift from Santa for the children. After Santa retires on December 25, the train will celebrate a Victorian Holiday from December 26 to January 5 when the season is finished until Spring. In addition the Holiday Lighted Forest train is lit up for the evening, you will have great views of the lights in Georgetown, as well as a beautiful synchronized holiday music and a light show in the forest. These tours are weather dependent. All departures are from Georgetown. Book this train well in advance, as all rides fill up very early.
